Here are some pictures of Champlain's Habitation at Port Royal established in 1603.
Louisbourg, built on Cape Breton Island (Ile Royale) in 1719, was one of the major military fortresses in the New World. The military citadel dominated the town from the top of the largest hill. This citadel housed a garrison of several hundred soldiers, a prison, and a chapel. It was built in a harbour with the intent of guarding and controlling the Gulf of St. Lawrence. It remained an important French fortress from 1719 to 1760. Twice within this time it was captured by the British. Here are photos of the re-constructed site.
